2 Samuel 11:1; 12:29
Then it happened in the spring, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him and all Israel, and they destroyed the sons of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem. So David gathered all the people and went to Rabbah, fought against it and captured it.
Psalm 51:17
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
*
we can see that David began to lose his focus of his primary role as the king
because when other kings going out to battle, David stayed back at Jerusalem.
in v. 2, we can also see that he rose from the bed in the evening (not morning)
and just walking around the roof while his people are fighting in the frontline.
the result of such losing focus is doing evil in God's sight. and there are
consequences to follow. when God revealed his sin, David immediately repented
and with his "broken and contrite heart" he sacrificed himself unto the Lord,
then, in his newly transformed self he worshiped God in the House of the Lord.
subsequently, he gathered all the people and went out to fight a victorious battle.
that's where David should have been in the first place, wasn't it? so, don't
get stuck in Jerusalem but be in my own workplace where i must carry out
God's work.
